|MATT NISKANEN, Capitals|
|OVIE, YOU BIG FAKER!|
|When Alexander Ovechkin winds up for a one-timer, people listen. Or rather they hush.
He knows this. But he usually shoots anyway, as nobody scores from the back end of the zone without the benefit of a screen with greater regularity than the Capitals superstar.
But on this occasion Ovechkin showed the ice awareness of Wayne Gretzky and the unselfishness usually exhibited by his teammate Nicklas Backstrom.
Entering the zone on a 2-on-1 with that very Backstrom, Ovechkin did his linemate one better by faking a rafters-rocking one-timer from his patented left-circle scoring area, and instead dished the puck softly to the slot, where defenseman Matt Niskanen cruised right through the oblivious Flyer defense and found himself with a feather-soft pass on his stick and a completely faked-out Steve Mason nowhere in sight.
All that was left for Niskanen to do was slide the puck over the line as if it were an empty-net goal, which, for all intents and purposes thanks to Ovechkin’s fantastic fake, it was.
