|JAMIE BENN, Stars|
It’s going to take some doing for Jamie Benn of the Stars to achieve his fifth straight 30-goal season, but his 19th of the season carried along with it a major milestone.
The Art Ross Trophy winner of 2014-15 (when it took only 87 points to capture the coveted award) has always been one of the NHL’s most feared performers on the power play, but it was an even-strength goal which carried the Dallas left wing to his 500th point.
His milestone goal came from a prime scoring area — the lower right circle. He adroitly received a diagonal pass from Jason Spezza, but Jets defender Bryan Little had his stick extended to cover Benn’s blade as the puck came to him. To put a little room between him and Little, Benn backpedaled a bit to distance himself from Little’s bid to break up the play. And then with one motion, his momentum carrying him backward, Benn leveraged a sharp wrist shot that beat goalie Connor Hellebuyck to the near post.
With the goal, the former 5th round draft choice added another layer of return on one of the great middle-round draft picks in recent years. Should Benn score 32 more goals in a Dallas uniform, only Mike Modano will remain ahead of him on the all-time Dallas goal-scoring list.
